Chattogram, May 14 (V7N) – Chief Advisor to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has emphasized the crucial role of Chittagong Port in driving the country’s economic growth, calling it the "heartbeat of the country's economy." He made the remarks while visiting the port on Wednesday morning.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the NCT-5 premises, Dr. Yunus said, “It is not possible to open new horizons for the country’s economy without this port. Earlier, I only wrote about the development of Chittagong Port, but now I have had the opportunity to see it firsthand and start working.”
The Chief Advisor noted that significant initiatives have already been undertaken to boost the port’s capacity since he assumed office. “From day one, we have been working to develop Chittagong Port into a facility that meets international standards,” he said.
Highlighting the need for global collaboration, Dr. Yunus advocated for the involvement of foreign experts and institutions to enhance port efficiency. He stressed that connectivity with neighboring regions, including Nepal and India's northeastern 'Seven Sisters', would benefit all parties involved. “Those who connect will benefit; those who don’t will lose out,” he remarked.
Reminiscing about his childhood, Dr. Yunus said, “Chittagong Port is not new to me—I’ve known it since childhood. The port has changed a lot over the years, but unfortunately, the pace of change has been slow.”
He criticized the lack of long-term vision in port development and proposed that top global institutions should be entrusted with port management to ensure world-class standards. “The world has moved forward, but we are still lagging. No one thinks seriously about the future of this port. That’s why I called for a change,” he added.
