Chittagong, May 14 (V7N) – Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus delivered an inspiring address at the fifth convocation ceremony of Chittagong University on Wednesday, where he highlighted the significant role of the student community in shaping the world’s future.
Dr. Yunus emphasized the power of research, stating:
"The future of the world is in our own hands. We have to keep the whole world under our control through research. The student community will decide what the future of the world will be like."
Reflecting on his early years at Chittagong University, Dr. Yunus shared how the 1974 famine that devastated the country sparked his passion for making a difference. "I joined Chittagong University in 1972. Then in 1974, famine struck the country. There was a lot of crying all over the country. Seeing that famine, I thought of doing something for the people," he recalled. This was the moment that led to his pioneering work in microfinance.
He further added that at that time, he never imagined receiving the Nobel Prize, but his determination to help the people of Bangladesh ultimately led to global recognition.
In his speech, Dr. Yunus also criticized the current business-driven economy, saying:
"The current economy is the economy of business, not the economy of people. Any economics has to start with people. We have built a business-centric civilization. This civilization is a suicidal civilization. It will not survive." He called for a new civilization centered on people, with the goal of organizing the world through research that serves a meaningful purpose.
Dr. Yunus was honored with an honorary D-Litt degree from Chittagong University during the event, in recognition of his contributions to social entrepreneurship and global development.
