Dhaka, June 11 (V7N) — The holy Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across Bangladesh on Saturday (June 7) with great religious fervor and enthusiasm. This year, more than 9.1 million animals were sacrificed across the country, according to official data released by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock on Tuesday (June 10).
As per the Department of Livestock’s calculation, a total of 9,136,000 sacrificial animals were slaughtered during Eid. Among them, approximately 4.75 million were cows and buffaloes, 4.43 million were goats and sheep, and 960 fell into other categories.
An analysis of the data shows that Sylhet division saw the lowest number of sacrifices, with 319,823 animals slaughtered, followed by Mymensingh division with 383,162.
The highest number of sacrifices took place in Rajshahi division, with 2,324,971 animals sacrificed. Dhaka division ranked second with 2,185,040 sacrifices, followed by Chattogram division with 1,753,732.
In other divisions, 804,224 animals were sacrificed in Khulna, 904,783 in Barishal, and 964,999 in Rangpur.
The Department of Livestock compiled these figures using stratified random sampling, collecting at least one percent of data from three representative villages—small, medium, and large—in each upazila.
Meanwhile, the department reported that around 3.31 million sacrificial animals remained unsold this year. Officials attributed this to an increase in the production of sacrificial animals, noting that the remaining animals are expected to be used in future religious rituals and ceremonies.
