Dhaka, Aug 16 (V7N) – Badiul Alam Majumdar, editor of Citizens for Good Governance (Sujon) and member of the Consensus Commission, has said that it will not be possible for the Election Commission (EC) to conduct a fair election if the government itself is unwilling.

He made the remarks on Saturday morning while speaking at a shadow parliament discussion on the role of the EC in ensuring fair elections, held at the FDC.

Emphasizing the urgency of holding national elections by February, Badiul Alam warned that if a level playing field is not ensured, polls will inevitably be biased. “If there is another controversial election this time, the country will move towards an uncertain future,” he cautioned.

He further noted that unless meaningful reforms are introduced, elections will be conducted under the same flawed system as before. “The Election Commission alone cannot guarantee fair and impartial elections. Political parties must play a positive role. Moreover, without the neutrality of the field administration and law enforcement agencies, even a willing EC will fail,” he added.
