Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has appealed to Ireland for assistance in extending Bangladesh's transition period for the Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) in the European Union (EU) market until 2032. This extension aims to bolster Bangladesh's economic growth momentum during the post-graduation period from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

The call for support was made during a meeting with a high-level Irish delegation, led by Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment Simon Coveney, at the Prime Minister's official residence Ganabhaban. PM's Speechwriter Md Nazrul Islam briefed reporters after the meeting, stating that Sheikh Hasina emphasized the importance of Ireland's backing for extending business facilities, particularly the GSP, until 2032.

Recognizing Ireland as a close friend and partner, the Prime Minister sought Ireland's support in EU forums and called upon Irish entrepreneurs to invest in Bangladesh's special economic zones and hi-tech parks. Highlighting Bangladesh's potential as a marketing hub for millions of consumers, she encouraged investments in sectors such as ICT, pharmaceuticals, and agro-based industries.

Addressing labor issues, Sheikh Hasina clarified that misinformation is often spread maliciously, emphasizing the need for direct communication between EU countries and the Bangladesh government to address any misunderstandings.

In response, Minister Simon Coveney expressed Ireland's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and extending technical support to Bangladesh's technology and agro-processing industries. He also pledged continued support for Bangladesh's socio-economic development in international forums.

Regarding the Rohingya crisis, the Irish minister proposed intensifying security in Rohingya camps, promoting income-generating activities, and providing permanent and improved housing. In response, Sheikh Hasina affirmed Bangladesh's efforts to ensure security in the camps and mentioned the housing project in Bhashanchar for Rohingya refugees.

The meeting was attended by PM's Principal Secretary M Tofazzel Hossain Miah, Ambassador of Ireland to India Kevin Kelly, and Honorary Consul of Ireland for Bangladesh Masud Jamil Khan, among others.
