Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina addressed the distortion of history surrounding the proclamation of independence by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman following his assassination in 1975. During a discussion at the AL office in Tejgaon, organized on the occasion of the Great Independence Day-2024, she emphasized that after Bangabandhu's assassination, the narrative of his proclamation of independence in 1971 was altered.
Sheikh Hasina recalled how Bangabandhu's declaration of independence was disseminated through wireless communication, and his party members spread the message across the country. However, she lamented that following his assassination, the historical account was manipulated, suggesting a simplistic narrative where independence was achieved through the actions of a single Major. She asserted that such a portrayal did not align with the reality of achieving independence for a nation.
The Prime Minister also raised questions about Ziaur Rahman's allegiance during the War of Liberation in 1971, pointing to a letter from Pakistani army officer Mirza Aslam Beg expressing satisfaction with Zia's activities during that time. She questioned why Pakistanis took care of Zia's family and expressed satisfaction with his actions, despite Zia's proclamation of independence.
General Mirza Aslam Beg, who later served as the Pakistan Army Chief from 1988 to 1991, played a significant role in Pakistan's military and political landscape during that period, which included the aftermath of President General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq's death in 1988.
