Five students from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) have voiced allegations regarding the instigation of a "dark organization" amidst the ongoing movement surrounding the entry of Chhatra League activists onto the campus.
During a press conference held at Buet Shaheed Minar on Saturday afternoon, these students claimed that there's a deliberate attempt to sow chaos within Buet, utilizing the sentiments of students under the influence of this "dark organization." They further alleged the presence and activities of Islami Chhatra Shibir and the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir within the campus premises.
The press conference, led by student Tanvir Mahmud, emphasized that they are not affiliated with any student organization. Mahmud highlighted an incident in July 2023 where 34 former and current Buet students were arrested on charges of anti-state conspiracy and sabotage. Despite being on bail, these students faced intimidation for participating in a human chain against fundamentalism. Moreover, Mahmud detailed instances of bullying and threats faced by students expressing their opinions in internal Facebook groups.
Another student, Ashik Alam, pointed out a series of attacks and incidents on campus, alleging the open operation of Hizb ut-Tahrir without student politics. He stated that anyone advocating for pro-liberation sentiments is unfairly labeled with the Chhatra League tag, indicating a suppression of progressive politics within Buet.
Alam asserted that dark politics is being propagated to suppress believers in progressive ideologies on campus. However, he affirmed their commitment to preventing any anti-liberation sentiment from gaining traction within Buet.
The students clarified that the arrival of a student organization president on campus should not pose any issues as long as political activities are not involved.
