Bangladeshi security forces and law enforcement agencies are gearing up for a coordinated operation against the armed hill group Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) in Bandarban. This decision follows a series of alarming incidents, including bank robberies, kidnappings, and attacks on security checkposts in the district.

Five cases have been filed over these incidents in Bandarban, and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has rescued the Sonali Bank branch manager, who was abducted during the turmoil.

At a press briefing, RAB officials announced the launch of a joint pincer operation involving the army, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and RAB. This operation aims to eliminate the KNF presence in the district.

Director of the Legal and Media Wing of RAB, Khandker Al Moin, emphasized that the operation will utilize various anti-terrorist tactics in the hilly terrain. He pointed out that the recent bank robberies and looting were likely attempts by the KNF to demonstrate their power and competence.

Efforts for peace and reconciliation with the KNF had previously been underway, but their recent criminal activities have led to the necessity of a law enforcement response.

Security has been reinforced in Khagrachhari and Bandarban, with increased police presence at banks to ensure safety. Despite tensions in Thanchi and Ruma, security officials assure residents that the situation is under control and urge them not to panic.

In a significant move, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal is set to visit Bandarban to assess the situation firsthand, demonstrating the government's commitment to addressing the unrest in the region. Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has assured that the government is taking decisive action to tackle terrorist activities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, expressing confidence that the situation will be brought under control soon.
