Resorts and businesses in Sajek Valley, Rangamati, are grappling with a severe water crisis, posing challenges to tourism in the area.
The crisis, which began on Saturday afternoon, has intensified since Sunday, according to the Sajek Resort and Cottage Owners Association. With the influx of tourists during the extended Eid and Bengali New Year holidays, managing the water demand has become increasingly difficult for the valley's establishments.
Water is currently being sourced from a location five kilometers away, exacerbating the challenge. Matijoy Tripura, joint general secretary of the association, highlighted the strain caused by the surge in tourists coupled with the dry season. Tourists have been urged to use water sparingly as efforts to address the scarcity continue.
The situation has led to difficulties for tourists without prior room bookings, forcing some to return home and others to seek accommodation in local houses due to the lack of available rooms. The water crisis is expected to persist unless there is significant rainfall in the area.
Representatives from the Chakma community responsible for water supply noted that the presence of tourists requires around 160 to 170 water vehicles daily. However, due to dwindling water sources, only 60 water vehicles were supplied from Sunday morning until noon.
Sajek Valley, known for its natural beauty, hosts approximately 120 resorts and numerous small and large businesses, with the capacity to accommodate around 3,000 tourists overnight. However, the current water shortage poses a significant challenge to the tourism sector in the region.
