During a seminar titled "Defence Diplomacy: Strategy for Bangladesh," Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed underscored the multifaceted contributions of the Bangladesh military beyond peacekeeping missions. General Ahmed emphasized that military personnel are trained not only for combat but also for conflict prevention and resolution, reflecting Bangladesh's commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and promoting global peace and stability.
Speaking at the seminar organized by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS), General Ahmed outlined five key tasks performed by the Bangladesh military. These include defending the motherland, nation-building activities, disaster management both within and beyond national boundaries, aid to civil power, and overseas employment opportunities.
He highlighted Bangladesh's active involvement in disaster management efforts in various countries, such as China, India, Sri Lanka, and Turkey, among others. Additionally, he emphasized the military's role in supporting national interests through overseas employment initiatives, including contributions beyond UN peacekeeping operations.
General Ahmed also discussed Bangladesh's defense diplomacy efforts, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with other government departments to achieve national interests effectively. He highlighted the significance of military diplomacy in enhancing Bangladesh's global standing and fostering relations with other countries.
Furthermore, General Ahmed provided insights into Bangladesh's engagements with other nations, such as Central Africa and Gambia, through capacity-building initiatives and equipment donations. He underscored Bangladesh's commitment to contributing to global peace and security through various forms of assistance and cooperation.
Regarding engagement with Myanmar military leaders, General Ahmed acknowledged the complexities involved due to international sanctions and emphasized the importance of pragmatic considerations in such interactions.
