In a bid to enhance road safety, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader declared a strict measure, stating that motorcycles without riders wearing helmets would be refused fuel. The announcement came during the inaugural session of the advisory council established under the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Act 2017.
Quader emphasized the pressing need for such measures, citing the alarming rate of accidents involving motorcycles and autorickshaws, which have contributed significantly to road fatalities.
Expressing frustration over the lack of discipline on roads, Quader highlighted the need for concerted efforts to enforce regulations effectively. During the session, there was a proposal from Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation President Shahjahan Khan to consider completely destroying outdated vehicles instead of merely discarding them.
