Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has confirmed that the murder of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Md Anwarul Azim Anar in Kolkata was premeditated, and three individuals have been arrested in Bangladesh in connection with the case.
Speaking to reporters at his Dhanmondi residence on Wednesday, hours after the news broke that the MP was found murdered in New Town, Kolkata, the minister refrained from disclosing further details "for the sake of the investigation."
Khan emphasized that the police forces of both countries are collaborating on the investigation, and assured that the incident would not strain Dhaka-Delhi relations.
Md Anwarul Azim Anar, the lawmaker for Jhenaidah-4 and president of the Kaliganj upazila Awami League, had traveled to India for medical treatment earlier this month. His dismembered body was recovered by Kolkata police on Wednesday.
According to Kolkata police, the murder was planned. A deputy commissioner revealed that parts of the MP's body were discovered in a flat in Sanjeeva Garden, New Town. Two suspects have been detained in connection with the case.
