Efforts are underway to protect Marjat Baor in Kaliganj, Jhenaidah district, and other ecologically critical areas (ECAs) in Bangladesh. Despite being declared an ECA in 1999, illegal activities such as fishing continue. Similar issues persist in rivers around Dhaka, like Buriganga, Balu, Turag, and Shitalakshya, which suffer from severe pollution.
The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change is working to implement ECA regulations, though challenges include manpower and financial constraints. ECAs prohibit various activities to protect biodiversity and the environment, but enforcement has been lacking. The ministry is developing management plans and seeking World Bank loans to improve ECA implementation.
