Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has criticized the government's approach to addressing corruption within public service, stating that measures such as transfers, dismissals, and compulsory retirements are insufficient. TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman emphasized the need for proper legal actions against corrupt officials to prevent a culture of impunity.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman pointed out that recent administrative actions against officials accused of corruption, particularly in agencies like the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the police, are not enough to tackle the root causes of corruption. He noted that changes to the Government Service (Discipline & Appeal) Rules have weakened accountability, contradicting constitutional principles of equality before the law.
TIB called for a comprehensive approach to combating corruption, urging political leaders to take responsibility and implement genuine transparency and accountability measures. Dr Iftekharuzzaman stressed that exemplary punishments reflecting the severity of offenses are necessary to deter future misconduct.
