Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N) - South Korea has announced plans to contribute $10 million in humanitarian aid in 2024 to support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. This year’s funding has seen a significant increase, more than tripling the amount provided in the previous year, according to the South Korean embassy in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The aid will be channeled through various international organizations operating in Bangladesh, including the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration, the World Food Programme, and the United Nations Population Fund.

Since 2017, South Korea has consistently provided between $3 to $5 million annually to assist Rohingyas and their host communities in Bangladesh, working closely with the Bangladesh government and international partners.

In addition to the monetary support, South Korea has made its first rice donation of 15,000 tons, sufficient to feed 1 million Rohingyas for 1.5 months, further boosting this year’s total humanitarian aid package.

Over the past seven years, South Korea's contributions have funded various humanitarian efforts, including the provision of LPG, education, and food, as part of the Joint Response Plan (JRP).

"This year, funding aimed at empowering Rohingya women and youth through UNFPA has been newly incorporated into our humanitarian support," stated the embassy.

The South Korean government hopes that this increased funding will significantly aid the implementation of the Joint Response Plan 2024 and provide essential humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
