Chattogram, Aug 25 (V7N) - Due to rising water levels in Kaptai Lake surpassing the danger mark, the Kaptai Karnafuli Hydropower Station has opened 16 spillway gates, each by 6 inches. This has resulted in an additional discharge of 9,000 cubic feet per second (cusec) into the Karnafuli River.

The gates were opened simultaneously at 8:00 AM on Sunday, August 25, as confirmed by the station’s manager, ATM Abduzzaher (Supervising Engineer).

Engineer Abduzzaher explained that heavy rainfall and increased upstream flow have caused Kaptai Lake’s water level to rise continuously in recent days. By Saturday night, August 24, the water level reached 108 feet above mean sea level (MSL), and by Sunday morning, it had risen to 108.32 feet MSL, surpassing the danger mark.

Following the recommendations of the lake management committee, the spillway gates were opened at 8:00 AM to release water at a rate of 9,000 cusecs into the Karnafuli River.

The maximum capacity of Kaptai Lake is 109 feet MSL. To support power generation from the station’s five units, which produce 230-240 megawatts for the national grid, a regular discharge of 33,000 cusecs of water is maintained.
