Dhaka, Aug 29 (V7N): Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has signed the Instrument of Accession to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances, marking a significant step for Bangladesh in addressing human rights issues.

The signing took place during the weekly meeting of the council of advisers, with applause from the advisers present. "It is a historic occasion," the chief adviser's press wing quoted Prof. Yunus as saying.

The signing occurred just one day before the International Day for the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. Earlier this week, the interim government established a commission to investigate all cases of enforced disappearances attributed to security forces during Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule.

The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance was originally adopted in New York on December 20, 2006. The instrument of accession declared Bangladesh's commitment to uphold the stipulations of the convention.

"NOW THEREFORE I, Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser, declare that the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, having considered the above-mentioned Convention, accedes to the same and undertakes faithfully to perform and carry out the stipulations therein contained," the instrument stated.

"IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have signed this instrument of accession at Dhaka, Bangladesh on 29 August 2024," it concluded.
