Dhaka, Sep 10 (V7N) – The United States is set to begin discussions this week with Bangladesh's interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, on economic matters, according to a report by the Financial Times on Tuesday.

The interim administration, headed by Yunus, took office last month following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after intense protests over job quotas.

Brent Neiman, the US Treasury's Assistant Secretary for International Finance, expressed optimism that by implementing necessary reforms, Bangladesh could overcome its economic challenges and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth.

A delegation comprising US officials from the treasury, state, and trade departments is scheduled to address fiscal and monetary policy as well as the state of Bangladesh's financial system. These discussions are slated for the weekend in Dhaka.

However, both the finance ministry and Yunus' office have stated they were not informed about the upcoming talks.

Bangladesh's economy, valued at $450 billion, has faced significant challenges since the Russia-Ukraine conflict escalated, driving up the prices of key imports like fuel and food. This economic pressure prompted Bangladesh to seek a $4.7 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund last year.
