Dhaka, Sep 19 (V7N)- Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has voiced deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of two individuals at Dhaka University (DU) and Jahangirnagar University (JU) due to mob beatings. The incidents, both linked to theft suspicions, resulted in fatal consequences.

After a meeting at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters on Thursday, Jahangir emphasized, “If someone is accused of a crime, they must be handed over to the authorities. Vigilante justice is unacceptable, and no one has the right to take the law into their own hands.”

He addressed the rising instances of mob justice, urging the public to trust the legal system to address criminal behavior. Jahangir also highlighted the importance of making the police force more approachable, adding that the government is working to boost the morale of law enforcement officers in order to restore public trust. "A people-friendly police force should be more than just a concept—it should be a reality," he stated.

During the meeting, various issues, including traffic control, extortion, bribery, and corruption, were also discussed. Jahangir stressed the need for the police to ensure that citizens are not harassed. He noted a positive shift where victims are now filing their own complaints instead of relying on police intervention.

On Wednesday, Tofazzal Hossain, 32, was beaten to death in front of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall at DU over accusations of theft. On the same day, Shamim Ahmed, a former organizational secretary of Chhatra League’s JU unit, died from injuries sustained in a mob beating. He was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
