Dhaka, Feb 22 (V7N) – The ongoing energy crisis poses a major challenge to Bangladesh's internal trade and industrial sector, potentially hindering its transition to a middle-income country by 2026, warned the Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB).
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday (February 22) at Bishwa Sahitya Kendra in Bangla Motor, CAB Advisor Professor M. Shamsul Alam expressed concerns over rising gas and electricity prices, calling it a deliberate move against consumer interests.
Professor Alam alleged that a conspiracy is behind the continuous increase in energy prices, creating an unfair burden on consumers and industries. He criticized the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) for being evasive and failing to protect consumer rights.
CAB General Secretary Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan echoed these concerns, stating that BERC is actively pushing for further price hikes in gas and electricity.
Referring to past movements, Professor Alam remarked, “1971 gave us a country, and the July student and public movement created a space for establishing the rights of the masses.” He emphasized that consumer rights must not be undermined by corporate or regulatory manipulation.
CAB has called for an immediate halt to unjust price increases, urging authorities to prioritize public welfare over business interests in energy sector policies.
