The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) witnessed a significant turnout in its election for the term of 2024-26, with 89 percent of the electorate casting their votes. The polling, held at the BGMEA Building in Uttara, unfolded peacefully from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, marking a crucial event in the garment industry's governance.

Chairman of the Election Management Board, Jahangir Alamin, addressed reporters after the conclusion of polling, affirming that the election transpired in a free and fair environment without any major complaints. The robust participation underscored the industry's engagement and commitment to shaping its leadership for the upcoming term.

Out of a total of 2496 eligible voters, 2226 individuals exercised their voting rights, representing an impressive turnout of more than 89 percent. Notably, in Dhaka, over 90 percent of eligible voters cast their votes, reflecting a strong turnout and enthusiasm among industry stakeholders. Similarly, in Chattogram, despite a slightly lower turnout percentage, a significant number of voters participated in the electoral process.

The election featured a competitive landscape, with 70 candidates vying for 35 director posts across Dhaka and Chattagram. Two panels, namely the Forum and the Combined Council (Sammilito Parishad), contested for positions on the BGMEA Board of Directors, adding depth and diversity to the electoral dynamics.

Leading the Sammilito Parishad panel is SM Mannan Kochi, Chairman of Seha Designs and the current senior vice-president of BGMEA. His counterpart, Faisal Samad, Director of Surma Garments and former vice-president, spearheaded the Forum panel, signaling a keenly contested election with experienced industry figures at the helm of both factions.

As the vote counting progresses and the results unfold, the outcome of the BGMEA election will shape the future trajectory of the garment industry, influencing policies, strategies, and collaborative efforts to propel growth and sustainability. The high turnout and peaceful conduct of the election reflect the industry's resilience and collective commitment to advancing its interests and fostering inclusive governance.
