Oct 28 (V7N)- Global e-commerce giant Amazon is set to lay off around 30,000 employees, marking one of its largest workforce reductions in recent years.

According to CNN News, the company has identified a large portion of employees hired during the Covid-19 pandemic as surplus and is now moving forward with job cuts to reduce operational costs.

The layoffs will affect about 10 percent of Amazon’s 350,000 corporate employees, with a significant number of managers included in the list in an effort to streamline bureaucracy within the company.

The massive layoff process begins today, though Amazon has already been cutting jobs in various departments over the past two years.

Earlier in June, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy hinted that the company would increasingly automate routine tasks using artificial intelligence (AI) — a move that may now be contributing to the widespread job cuts.
