Dhaka, Jan 10 (V7N)— A nationwide red alert has been issued to apprehend former Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Alam, who escaped from the Uttara Purba Police Station in the capital.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Uttara Division, Rawnak Jahan, confirmed the development on Friday afternoon. "All necessary measures have been taken, including the issuance of a red alert from police headquarters," she said. A case has also been filed in connection with Shah Alam's escape, according to DC Jahan.

Shah Alam, who was arrested from Kushtia Police Lines late Wednesday night, was brought to the Uttara Purba Police Station for further proceedings. However, he managed to escape custody on Thursday afternoon, just hours before he was to be presented in court.

In response to the incident, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Department confirmed that a Sub-Inspector (SI) has been arrested for alleged negligence leading to Shah Alam's escape.

Shah Alam faces multiple charges, including murder, linked to the August 5 anti-discrimination student movement. Authorities have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend him, and all law enforcement agencies are on high alert.

The incident has raised concerns about the handling of high-profile detainees, with investigations underway to determine how Shah Alam managed to evade custody.
