Dhaka, Mar 05 (V7N) –Around a hundred people, including students, 'raided' the Gulshan residence of former Sirajganj-4 lawmaker Tanveer Imam, son of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina's late political adviser HT Imam, on suspicion of illegal weapons, drugs and a large amount of money being kept there.
The raid was conducted at house number 8-I on Road-81 in Gulshan-2 at around 12 midnight on Tuesday (March 4).
No law enforcement officers were initially seen in this student-public raid, but journalists from various media outlets were present and broadcasted the incident live.
However, speaking to The Business Standard, Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury, assistant commissioner, Gulshan Zone of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said police later stopped the crowd from conducting the raid.
"A police patrol team stopped the student-public crowd from raiding the house in Gulshan after receiving information," he added.
According to eyewitnesses and police, about 100 people, including students, gathered in front of Justice Shahabuddin Park in Gulshan-2 responding to an earlier announcement on social media that a crowd of student-public would raid Tanvir Imam's house tonight.
At around 12:00am, the crowd started a procession and attempted to enter Tanveer Imam's house but they were stopped by security guards in front of the building.
However, some students got inside by climbing the gate and opened it, allowing others to enter.
They searched every room of the flat, searching various luggage, doors and chests, said one eyewitness.
"We had information that Tanveer Imam's house contained illegal weapons, drugs and a huge amount of money. However, nothing of this kind was found during the raid," a student, who participated in the raid, said on condition of anonymity.
Half-an-hour after the raid started, a team from the Gulshan Police Station reached the spot. Army members were also seen outside the house at the time.
No members of Tanveer Imam's family were present at the house during the raid. Only a maid and a security guard were present.
