Sylhet, Feb 27, (V7N) - A moderate earthquake struck the Sylhet region in the early hours of Wednesday, February 27. The tremor was felt at 2:55 AM. Meteorologist Mustafa Kamal Palash confirmed the event through a social media post, stating that the earthquake's epicenter was located in Khairupatia, a town 17 kilometers south and southeast of Guwahati, Assam, India.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers below the Earth's surface.
Rubaet Kabir, the in-charge of the Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, also confirmed the earthquake, adding that its epicenter was in the Morigaon area of Assam, India. Kabir classified the earthquake as a moderate tremor based on its intensity, and it was felt across the Sylhet region.
No immediate reports of significant damage or casualties have been received. The public is advised to stay alert and follow safety protocols during aftershocks.
