DHAKA, April 18, (V7N) – Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today emphasized the profound link between cultural preservation and sustainable development, calling it essential for both environmental integrity and community well-being.
"The preservation of our cultural heritage is intrinsically linked to the well-being of our environment and communities," she said while inaugurating the Baishakhi Festival and the exhibition "Crafting the Many Threads of Cultural Textiles" at Edgewater Gallery in Dhaka’s Gulshan area.
Speaking as the chief guest, Rizwana lauded the event as a tribute to the resilience, craftsmanship, and creativity of Bangladeshi artisans, stressing the importance of protecting traditional practices and promoting eco-friendly growth within the textile sector.
"There is a vital connection between culture and sustainable development," she affirmed, highlighting how initiatives like this contribute to broader goals of environmental sustainability and socio-economic inclusion.
The adviser praised renowned designer Maheen Khan for her longstanding commitment to empowering local artisans and advocating for sustainable and environmentally-conscious practices in traditional textile production.
"Maheen Khan’s work not only celebrates the artistry of our weavers but also highlights the importance of sustainable practices that ensure the longevity of these invaluable traditions," Rizwana added.
The inauguration coincided with the Baishakhi Festival, marking the Bengali New Year with traditional music performances and a colorful fashion show that showcased local heritage in a modern light.
The event drew a diverse audience including artists, designers, cultural activists, and heritage enthusiasts, all gathered to celebrate and support Bangladesh’s rich textile and cultural legacy.
Speakers at the event also included fashion designer Maheen Khan, organiser Shoibal Saha, and representatives from UCB and MTB Banks, who expressed their support for cultural initiatives rooted in sustainability and tradition.
