Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury has rejected the possibility of a nationwide closure of educational institutions due to the heatwave affecting parts of the country. He made these remarks during an event in Dhaka on Sunday.

However, he highlighted that in areas where the heat becomes unbearable, schools will have the discretion to make decisions locally. District primary and secondary education officers will have the authority to close educational institutions after thorough deliberations at the local level.

Minister Chowdhury noted that while temperatures have exceeded 40°C in five districts, such conditions are not unprecedented in Bangladesh. He reasoned that it would be impractical to close all educational institutions nationwide based solely on forecasts for a few districts.

He cautioned against basing decisions for schools across the country solely on the temperature readings of Dhaka city. In cases of extreme temperatures reaching 42°C or above, education officers have the mandate to hold discussions and decide on closing educational institutions in their respective areas. They also have the flexibility to adjust operating hours as necessary.
