Ukhiya, Aug 01 (V7N) -
Continuous heavy rainfall, combined with mountain runoff and tidal surges, has submerged 35 villages in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, leading to severe flooding in low-lying areas. Nearly 20,000 people are trapped by the rising waters.
Numerous thatched houses have collapsed, rural roads are devastated, and water gardens have been extensively damaged. Despite the dire situation, the Upazila administration has not yet responded, causing frustration among local residents.
Affected areas include various villages in Jalia Palong, Haldia Palong, and other unions, with reports of significant damage to homes, agricultural land, and fish farms. Many families are stranded without aid, and local leaders have called for urgent assistance from authorities.
The Upazila Executive Officer Tanvir Hossain has visited some affected areas and urged residents in vulnerable zones to seek shelter at nearby cyclone centers. However, the response has been criticized, with accusations that NGOs have not provided adequate support despite spending large sums on disaster management projects.
Local officials report extensive damage and have instructed union representatives to compile lists of affected families. The Upazila Parishad Chairman, Jahangir Kabir Chowdhury, could not be reached for comment.
