On Tuesday, Bangladesh's High Court (HC) made a ruling stating that one of the two children born in Japan will remain with her father, US citizen Imran Sharif, who is originally from Bangladesh, while the other daughter will live with her Japanese mother, Nakano Eriko Japanese citizen.

The older daughter will remain with her mother, while the younger girl will live with her father.

After receiving a review petition in this respect, the ruling was given by the single bench of High Court Judge Justice Mamnoon Rahman.

In the courtroom, engineer Sharif was defended by senior attorney Barrister Akthtar Imam, Rashna Imam, and Advocate Nasima Akter Lovely, while the Japanese physician mother was represented by Barrister Azmalul Hossain and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir.

Reporters were informed by attorney Shishir Monir that parents will be allowed to see their kids.

A Dhaka family court ruled earlier on January 29 of last year that the daughters will remain with their mother.

The order was issued by Durdana Rahman, the Second Additional Assistant Judge and Family Court judge in Dhaka.

Father Sharif thereafter filed a petition against the family court ruling with the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Court.

The father filed a second petition with the HC on July 16 of the same year after his appeal for his parents' custody was denied by the District and Session Judge courts.

Following a hearing, the HC issued the order on Tuesday.

On January 18, 2020, Eriko, a doctor, filed for divorce from Engineer Imran Sharif due to a marital disagreement after 12 years of marriage.

She also filed a petition for custody of their three children with a Tokyo family court on January 28, 2021.

However, Imran arrived back in Bangladesh on February 21 together with his first two Japanese daughters. In the meantime, a Japanese court decided to maintain the children's mother's custody.

Days after arriving in Bangladesh, on August 19, 2021, Eriko filed a writ case with the HC asking for the daughters' custody.

Nonetheless, the court stated that the mother may only spend ten days a year with her girls in exclusivity and that Imran, the father, would cover her lodging and travel costs.

The Appellate Division ruled on February 13, 2022, that the family court would determine the two girls' custody; in the meanwhile, the children will live with their mother.

On December 23, Eriko attempted to flee Dhaka with her two kids.

When she attempted to remove the kids against the court order, the police turned her away at the airport.
