Dhaka, Nov 07 (V7N)- Swapan Ray Chowdhury, legal representative for former minister and Awami League Advisory Council member Amir Hossain Amu, claimed he was assaulted by pro-BNP lawyers during a remand hearing held on Thursday morning in Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza's courtroom.
The incident reportedly began after Public Prosecutor (PP) Omar Faruq of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court advocated for Amu's remand, which Swapan Ray argued was politically motivated. This led to a heated reaction from pro-BNP lawyers, who allegedly seized Ray's collar, dragged him, and pushed him to the floor near the courtroom entrance, then kicked him repeatedly until other lawyers intervened and pulled him to safety.
Following the incident, Ray criticized the court's response, stating, "Despite the judge's presence, 10-20 lawyers from the opposing side attacked me after I pointed out the PP’s political remarks. They assaulted me, pushed me down, and kicked me without any security response, and the court remained silent. It shows the level of insecurity in Bangladesh."
In response, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq clarified that two Awami League factions were present in court for the hearing, and the dispute over speaking roles contributed to the unrest.
