Dhaka, Dec 02 (V7N) — The International Criminal Tribunal has ordered the arrest of former Superintendent of Police of RAB-2, Mohiuddin Farooqui, and Additional Superintendent of Police of the Barisal Range, Alep Uddin, in connection with a case of crimes against humanity linked to enforced disappearances. This marks the first time arrests have been made in such a case under the tribunal's jurisdiction.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Ghulam Mortuza Majumdar, issued the order on Monday after the accused were presented from Kashimpur Jail's high-security cell in Gazipur earlier in the day.

Both Mohiuddin Farooqui and Alep Uddin previously served as officers in the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and face allegations of involvement in numerous enforced disappearances and instances of torture.

The tribunal's decision follows their earlier arrest on November 13, 2024, in connection with the death of Zobair Omar Khan during the anti-discrimination student movement in Shanir Akhra, Dhaka. After being remanded for two days in that case, the accused were sent to jail.

On November 28, the tribunal, led by Justice Md. Ghulam Mortuza Majumdar, issued an order requiring their production before the court today.

This case signifies a significant milestone in Bangladesh's judicial system as it addresses allegations of enforced disappearances under international humanitarian laws, bringing accountability for actions that have long sparked public outrage.
