Dhaka, Dec 08 (V7N) – A Dhaka court has placed former civil aviation and tourism minister, Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan, and three others on a three-day remand in connection with the murder of Shamim, a student from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahin Reza issued the remand order on Sunday following a hearing.
The Investigating Officer, Dhanmondi Sub-Inspector Monir Hossain, had requested a five-day remand for five individuals, filing the appeal the same day. However, due to the illness of former state minister for industry, Nazrul Islam Mazumdar, the hearing proceeded for the remaining four accused.
The court approved their arrests prior to the hearing and subsequently granted a three-day remand for each.
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi supported the remand petition, while defense lawyers argued for bail and the cancellation of the remand request. After considering both sides, the court approved the remand.
According to case records, Shamim participated in a protest march on August 5 in Dhanmondi to oppose discrimination. The march was attacked by leaders and activists of the Awami League and affiliated organizations near the Kalabagan area. Shamim sustained injuries during the assault and later succumbed to his injuries at Suhrawardy Hospital on August 6.
On October 3, Shamim's mother, Jahanara Begum, filed a murder case with the Dhanmondi police station, naming 128 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Faruk Khan was arrested at his Dhaka residence on October 14 in connection with the case.
