Pirojpur, Dec 11 (V7N) — A sedition case against BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman was dismissed today by the Pirojpur Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. Judge Md. Helal Uddin acquitted Rahman of all charges, citing a lack of evidence.

The case was filed on December 24, 2014, by Md. Delwar Hossain, then General Secretary of the Pirojpur District Bar Association, at Sadar Police Station. Tarique Rahman was accused of undermining national sovereignty and making inflammatory statements about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

During Wednesday's hearing, the court reviewed the evidence and concluded there was no basis to proceed, ordering the case dismissed.

In response to the verdict, Pirojpur district BNP convener Alamgir Hossain stated, "The Awami League has filed numerous false cases to destroy Tarique Rahman. He will be acquitted in all of them and return home soon."

This ruling follows similar outcomes in other cases against Rahman. On December 1, a Sylhet court dismissed two sedition cases, and the next day, a Gazipur court acquitted him in a car arson case.

The series of acquittals has bolstered BNP supporters’ hope for Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh and active political participation.
