Chandpur, Dec 25 (V7N) — A Chandpur court has granted a seven-day remand for Akash Mondal, alias Irfan, the primary suspect in the gruesome seven-murder case aboard a cargo ship in the Meghna River.

The remand was approved on Wednesday evening by Chandpur Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Farhan Sadiq. The investigating officer, Naval Police Inspector Md. Kalam Khan, had sought a 10-day remand, but the court allowed seven days after hearing arguments from the prosecution.

Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Sharif Mahmud Sayem confirmed the court's decision. Earlier in the day, RAB-11 handed over Akash Mondal to the Naval Police Superintendent of the Chandpur Region. The accused was then escorted to the court under tight security involving RAB, Naval Police, and Detective Police personnel.

The case stems from a tragic discovery on December 23, when police recovered the bodies of five individuals from a fertilizer ship anchored at the mouth of the Ishanbala Majerchar Canal in the Meghna River, Haimchar Upazila. Three others were found injured but succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, bringing the death toll to seven.

The Ministry of Industries, the district administration, and the district police have each formed separate committees to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, shipowner Mahbub Morshed has filed a case under sections 396/397 of the Penal Code at Haimchar Police Station.

The investigation continues as authorities aim to uncover the motive behind the killings and identify all individuals involved in the heinous crime.
