Dhaka, May 4 (V7N) — The much-discussed murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi was not motivated by marital discord, theft, or professional rivalry, according to a recent progress report by the high-powered taskforce investigating the case.
The findings reveal that two individuals were directly involved in the killing. Sagar was stabbed first, followed by Runi. Despite sustaining critical injuries, both remained alive for a significant period before succumbing. However, the investigation continues to face setbacks in identifying the actual killers due to inconclusive DNA evidence.
The taskforce was formed following a High Court directive on September 30 of last year, after the fall of the Awami League government in the wake of a student-led uprising. Although the court initially instructed the taskforce to submit its findings within six months, it failed to meet the deadline.
On April 22, responding to a plea from the state, the High Court granted the taskforce an extension of another six months to complete the investigation and file a comprehensive report.
The case, which has remained unresolved for over a decade, continues to attract public and media attention, with widespread demand for justice and transparency.
