Dhaka, Oct 20 (V7N) — The government has decided to conduct the trial of killings committed during the July Uprising under the Speedy Trial Tribunal, aiming to ensure swift justice in all murder cases except those currently being handled by the International Crimes Tribunal.

According to a statement issued by the Law Ministry, a total of 837 murder cases have been filed across the country in connection with the suppression of student and public movements allegedly carried out on the orders of the Awami fascist government. Among them, 45 cases are under trial at the International Crimes Tribunal, while 19 cases have already had charge sheets submitted following police investigations.

The ministry confirmed that, under Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act 2000, these 19 cases will now be transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal for immediate proceedings.

To ensure proper oversight and coordination, the Law Ministry has also formed a special committee led by the Additional Secretary of the Law and Justice Department. The committee’s task is to make the prosecution process for serious crimes, including murder, more efficient and transparent.

The mandate of the committee includes:

Preparing a complete list of all murder and serious crime cases related to the July Uprising, along with their current status.

Identifying challenges in the prosecution of these cases (excluding those before the International Crimes Tribunal) and submitting recommendations to the government for resolving them.

Informing affected families and the public about the progress of the trials and overall prosecution efforts.

The government hopes that this move will accelerate justice delivery for victims’ families and restore public confidence in the judicial process surrounding the July Uprising incidents.
