Dhaka, Dec 01 (V7N) – A Dhaka court is set to deliver its verdict today, Monday, in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and 15 others over alleged fraud in the allocation of residential plots. The date was scheduled on November 25 after both sides completed their closing arguments before Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4.
The other accused in the case include Saiful Islam Sarkar, Administrative Officer at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works; Senior Assistant Secretary Purabi Goldar; Additional Secretary Oliullah; Secretary Kazi Wasi Uddin; former RAJUK Chairman’s personal assistant Anichur Rahman Miah; former RAJUK member Mohammad Khurshid Alam; Tanmoy Das; Mohammad Nasir Uddin; retired Major Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury; former Director Nurul Islam; Assistant Director Majharul Islam; Deputy Director Nayeb Ali Sharif; former Principal Secretary-1 to the Prime Minister Mohammad Salah Uddin; and former State Minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed. Among them, Khurshid Alam is currently in jail.
According to the case documents, Sheikh Rehana is accused of abusing authority and obtaining a 10-katha plot in the Purbachal New Town Project through irregular means. The case was filed on January 13 this year by ACC Deputy Director Salahuddin. After investigation, ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya submitted the chargesheet against 17 individuals on March 10.
Court officials say heightened security measures have been taken ahead of the verdict, given the high-profile nature of the case. Legal experts note that the ruling will carry significant political implications, particularly as it involves two members of the country’s most influential political family.
If convicted, the defendants may face imprisonment and financial penalties under Bangladesh’s anti-corruption laws. The court is expected to announce the verdict later in the day.
