Pabna, Dec 08 (V7N) – A Pabna court has granted bail to Nishi Rahman, the woman accused of killing eight newborn puppies in Ishwardi. The order was issued on Sunday afternoon by Tarikul Islam, Judge of Pabna Amoli Court-2.

State-side assisting lawyer Advocate Moshfeka Jahan Kanika confirmed the development, saying the court approved bail after a scheduled hearing. She noted that the charges are legally bailable and the court also considered the accused’s gender in its decision. The next hearing in the case has been set for January 11 next year.

Advocate Kanika said the investigation will now proceed, and after completion, a charge sheet will be submitted to the court. “If we see any irregularities or gaps in the investigation or the charge sheet, we will file objections and pursue further legal action. We want a proper investigation and justice in this case,” she added.

The incident surfaced after a stray dog named Tom, which lived on the Ishwardi UNO residence premises, gave birth to eight puppies about a week earlier. On Monday morning, Tom was seen frantically searching for her missing puppies, prompting concern among staff members.

Later, employees of the Upazila Parishad learned that the puppies had allegedly been tied inside a sack and dumped alive into a nearby pond late Sunday night by Nishi Rahman, wife of Hasanur Rahman Nayan—an officer of the Small Farmer Development Foundation under the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division.

The bodies of the puppies were recovered from the pond on Monday morning.

On December 2, Ishwardi Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun filed a case against Nishi Rahman. She was arrested from a rented house later that night and produced before court on December 3, where her bail plea was rejected and she was sent to jail.

The case has since drawn strong local reaction and calls for strict legal action to prevent cruelty against animals.
