A group of armed assailants snatched Tk22 lakh from a money exchange businessman in broad daylight after opening fire in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.

The victim, Md Mahmudul Islam, 55, owner of Mahmud Money Exchange, sustained a bullet injury and is currently undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.


The incident took place around 10am on Tuesday on Abdul Baten Road, beside the Mirpur Stadium.

Members of the police, RAB, and other law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene soon after the attack.

As per his daily routine, Mahmudul was heading to his office at Mirpur 10 circle from his home when the attack occurred.

Upon reaching the area near the stadium, six men on two motorcycles intercepted him on Abdul Baten Road.

“They demanded money from me. When I refused, they shot me in the left side of my waist and snatched the Tk22 lakh, I was carrying,” Mahmudul said.

Locals rushed him to a nearby hospital, from where he was later transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Confirming the incident, Mirpur Model police station Officer-in-Charge Md Sajjadur Rumman said: “Upon receiving information about a businessman being shot, we arrived at the scene and began an investigation. We are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify those involved.”

Mahmudul Islam’s family confirmed that the attackers made off with Tk22 lakh. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident so far.
