Tangail, July 11 (V7N) – A written complaint has been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) accusing Sarwar Alam, cashier of the Local Government Branch at the Tangail Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) Office, of extensive corruption and financial misconduct. On July 10, Alom Mia, son of local notable Julhas Mia, and two others lodged the complaint at the ACC’s main office in Dhaka.
The complainants allege that Sarwar Alam, originally from Ghatail Upazila, has amassed wealth worth hundreds of millions of takas through various illicit means during his tenure at the DC office. They accuse him of establishing a ‘commission syndicate’, demanding illicit payments for jobs, license approvals, and file processing—especially under the current Awami League government.
It is claimed he opened a gambling page called “STLS” via an online platform, embezzling large sums from the public before abruptly closing it. He is also said to have collaborated with middlemen in issuing birth certificates in Tangail Municipality, charging Tk 400 to Tk 800 unlawfully for each document.
The complaint notes that despite his modest salary, Sarwar Alam leads a prominent lifestyle in Tangail—living in an upscale home in Saboliccia, booking multiple apartments in Bilgharinda, and acquiring land in Hazaraghat, far beyond what his official income would permit.
Several anonymous municipal employees corroborated these irregularities. They said that during the mayoral term of Awami League leader Sirajul Haque Alamgir, Sarwar Alam conspired with employees to issue and amend birth certificates illegally in bulk under a single name, collecting significant sums. When journalists approached him for comments, he reportedly responded harshly and even threatened legal and physical reprisals.
Alom Mia, the complainant, emphasized that the ACC must conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation, stating, “If investigated properly, Sarwar Alam’s illicit networks will be exposed.” He further described Alam as “a collaborator with fascists” and alleged that he uses intimidation to avoid scrutiny.
When approached for comment, Sarwar Alam declined to respond. Attempts to reach Local Government Branch Deputy Director (Upazila Secretary) and municipal administrator Shihab Raihan by phone were unsuccessful.
ACC’s sub-director for Tangail, Fakhrul Islam, confirmed receipt of the complaint. He stated that after initial vetting by the central office, the matter will be forwarded to the ACC’s Tangail unit for formal investigation, pending approval of the written complaint.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about entrenched corruption in local government offices. Observers argue that decisive action is necessary to restore public trust and secure accountability in Tangail’s administrative system.
