Teknaf, Oct 20 (V7N)- Rough seas in Cox's Bazar Teknaf in hostile weather. Sea level has increased by 10-12 feet. The CC block of the embankment of Shahpari dwip in Sabrang Union of Teknaf Upazila has collapsed due to the tide.

Tidal water is entering the Shahpari is dwip area through the embankment. In such a situation, panic has spread among the local 40 thousand people. Under the supervision of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in June 2022, a dam of about three kilometers was constructed on the west and south sides of Shahpori Island at a cost of about Tk 151 crore.

The CC blocks installed on the west side embankment are collapsing due to tidal water and big waves. There is a danger that hundreds of people's houses, shops and various infrastructures will sink into the sea if the embankment is destroyed by a cyclone or a tidal wave. Since last Friday, such a scene has been seen in Shahpori dwip area.

The houses of the residents are near the embankment. There are 40 thousand people living in some villages of Shahpari Island. The CC block of about half a kilometer embankment is collapsing. At least 25 to 30 CC blocks of the embankment and more than 20 more sections downstream have moved.

The entire Shahpori dwip will be at risk once again if the mud dam breaks due to the tide

Deputy Assistant Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board Teknaf Mizanur Rahman told Voice7 News that a contractor company named M/S Shahid Brothers has been given a work order for setting up a new CC block at 100 meters of the embankment at a cost of Tk 2 crore.
