Rajshahi, Dec 14 (V7N)- The bitter cold in Rajshahi continues to disrupt daily life, as the region recorded the lowest temperature of the year on Friday, December 14, at 9.7 degrees Celsius. This temperature marks the beginning of a mild cold wave, as declared by the Rajshahi Regional Meteorological Office.
Despite the fog clearing in the morning, chilly winds from the north have kept the cold intense. The sun, although visible, has not provided much warmth, amplifying the discomfort for residents.
Challenges for Vulnerable Groups
The adverse weather conditions have significantly increased the suffering of the poor and uprooted people in Rajshahi. Many lack adequate winter clothing, leaving them vulnerable to the cold. The harsh weather has also led to a rise in cold-related illnesses, with hospitals reporting an influx of patients.
Impact on Agriculture
The cold and dense fog are also taking a toll on agriculture in the region. Umme Chalma, Director of the Rajshahi District Department of Agricultural Extension, expressed concerns about the prolonged fog's impact on Rabi crops. “Dense fog can create obstacles, such as the spread of diseases and pests. If it persists, there is a risk of some damage to the crops,” she said.
Farmers in the region are particularly worried about the potential effects on crop yields, as Rabi crops are vital to the local economy.
Regional Context
Ahidul Islam, in charge of the Rajshahi Regional Meteorological Office, mentioned that Rajshahi recorded the second-lowest temperature in the country after Panchagarh. He explained that temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius are classified as a mild cold wave.
Efforts are underway by local authorities and non-governmental organizations to provide relief to those most affected by the cold. However, the prolonged chilly conditions continue to pose challenges for both the people and the agricultural sector in Rajshahi.
