Rajshahi, Dec 28 (V7N)- The Rajshahi Development Authority (RDA) has announced its intention to rename the under-construction 'Bangabandhu Square' building at the Talaimari intersection of Boalia police station in Rajshahi. Once completed, the building will be called the 'Rajshahi RDA Complex.'

Background of the Project

In 2017, the RDA initiated the project, originally named 'Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Square,' on a 1.42-acre plot. The project was designed to honor the legacy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and enhance the aesthetic appeal of Rajshahi. The initial budget for the project was estimated at Tk 592.8 million.

However, costs soared to Tk 1.25 billion by 2022, doubling the initial budget. Progress was further hampered when the project's assistant engineer, Kamruzzaman, faced legal troubles and was sent to prison on corruption charges.

Political Shift and Renaming Decision

The decision to rename the building comes in the wake of the fall of the Awami League government. The RDA plans to send a formal proposal to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, seeking approval for the name change.

RDA Chief Executive Officer Abu Hayat Md. Rahmatullah stated, "We are sending a proposal to the relevant ministry to change the name of the newly constructed building. It will no longer be named after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We hope the ministry will approve the new name, and after that, we will inaugurate the building for cultural purposes."

Following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, the second phase of the project was canceled by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. Consequently, the building, constructed on a 12,518.8 square meter area at a reduced cost of Tk 610 million, has remained unused for the past six months.

Future Plans for the Building

The RDA envisions the renamed 'Rajshahi RDA Complex' as a hub for cultural activities. The facility will feature:

  • An open stage
  • An art gallery
  • A cafeteria
  • A conference room

The authority is also considering leasing the building to private individuals or organizations to ensure its utilization.

The renaming reflects the changing political landscape and raises questions about the fate of other initiatives tied to the legacy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The RDA’s move indicates a shift in priorities, focusing on practical usage and cultural promotion over commemorative symbolism.
