Dhaka, January 8, (V7N) – A Dhaka court today placed Nazrul Islam Kabiraj vice-president of Dhaka South City’s ward-56 Awami Jubo League, on a three-day remand in connection with the killing of Md Ali during the student-led mass uprising in July-August 2024.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the remand order after police sought a seven-day remand while presenting Kabiraj before the court.

Local residents apprehended Kabiraj on January 1 and handed him over to police. According to case documents, the incident occurred on July 19, 2024, when Md Ali participated in an anti-discrimination student rally in the Azimpur Colony area.

The rally was reportedly attacked by police and individuals allegedly affiliated with the ruling Awami League, who opened fire on protesters. Md Ali sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The case was formally filed with Lalbagh Police Station on December 30, 2024.

The incident was part of a broader mass uprising led by students across Bangladesh, protesting against discrimination and inequality. The demonstrations were marked by widespread participation but also met with significant police action and clashes, leading to injuries and fatalities.

Nazrul Islam Kabiraj's remand will allow police to interrogate him further regarding his alleged involvement in the violence and the killing of Md Ali. Investigators hope to uncover more details about the attack and its perpetrators.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice, but the case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding political and social unrest in the country.
