Hatiya, Feb 11 (V7N) – Two suspected were arrested following an intense firefight between joint forces and armed assailants during ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ on the isolated island of Hatiya in Noakhali. The operation took place near Kaisar Mia's brick kiln in Char Kailash village of Ochakhali around 2:30 AM on Monday night.

The arrested individuals were identified as Nabir Hossain (50) and Imam Hossain (40). They were apprehended with the assistance of local residents as they attempted to flee the scene during the confrontation.

According to Ochakhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ajmal Huda, a joint task force comprising members of the Navy, Coast Guard, and police launched the operation targeting suspected terrorist hideouts. As the forces approached Kaisar Mia’s brick kiln, the assailants opened fire and hurled homemade bombs at them.

In response, the police fired 20 rounds, while the Navy discharged four rounds from their submachine guns (SMG). Despite the heavy exchange of gunfire, no injuries were reported on either side.

As the situation escalated, local villagers intervened and managed to capture the two terrorists while they attempted to escape amidst the chaos.

Weapons Recovered

A significant cache of weapons was seized from the arrested individuals, including:

  • Three one-shooter guns
  • An American-made pistol
  • Eight rounds of ammunition
  • Twelve homemade bombs (cocktails)
  • Three knives

OC Ajmal Huda stated, “The detainees are currently in police custody. They will be interrogated thoroughly, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.”

He further emphasized the vital role played by local residents in assisting the security forces, adding that community cooperation has been essential in counter-terrorism operations in the region.

‘Operation Devil Hunt’ is an ongoing anti-crime and anti-terrorism campaign targeting criminal networks and terrorist groups across Bangladesh. The operation has resulted in multiple arrests in various districts, including the recent 52 arrests in Rajshahi, with several Awami League leaders among those detained.

The authorities have pledged to continue the operation until the country is free from what they describe as “devilish elements.”
