Mongla Feb 13 (V7N)– Students and members of the Citizens’ Committee staged a protest and sit-in on Thursday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Afia Sharmin. The demonstration took place in front of the Upazila Parishad’s main gate at 12:00 PM as part of the ongoing Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The protest erupted following a meeting between the UNO and four Awami League-affiliated UP chairmen at her office on Wednesday. Demonstrators accused Afia Sharmin of being a collaborator of fascism and chanted slogans against her alleged partiality. They warned of intensified protests, including a siege of the Upazila Parishad, if their demand was not met by the end of the day.
Authorities have taken heightened security measures, with the Navy and police deployed around the protest site to prevent any untoward incidents. Law enforcement officials have been monitoring the situation closely to maintain order.
The protesters remain firm in their stance, stating that their movement will continue until the UNO is removed from her position. Meanwhile, local administration sources have yet to issue an official response regarding the demand.
