Mongla, July 9 (V7N) – Prolonged rainfall in the past few days has resulted in widespread waterlogging in Mongla town, severely disrupting daily life. Streets, ponds, and homes have been submerged, with water even flooding kitchens. As a result, many families have been unable to cook for several days. Several residents have resorted to sheltering on beds, platforms, or makeshift structures to avoid the rising water levels.

The majority of the nine wards in the municipal town have been affected by waterlogging. The situation has arisen due to the lack of a proper drainage system to manage the heavy rainfall. This has left the local population, particularly day laborers, struggling to manage their daily routines.

Bahadur Mia, a resident of the Animal Hospital Road, stated, "The streets are flooded up to knee-deep, and even inside the house, the water is rising. Everyone is now living on the beds. Children can't go to school because the water is waist-deep on the streets."

Babul Bhuiya from Vashani Road mentioned, "There’s no drainage system here, and no way for the water to drain. Every house is flooded. People are now living on beds or makeshift platforms."

Johra Begum, a resident of Khocherdanga area, explained, "There is no way to send children to school with the water everywhere. The rain just doesn’t stop."

Jochhna Begum from Joy Bangla Road shared, "The stove has been flooded for a week, and we haven’t been able to cook for days. I’m using bricks to cook somehow."

Despite repeated complaints to the municipal authorities regarding the lack of water drainage, local residents claim that no action has been taken to resolve the issue.

Additionally, low-lying areas in the six union councils of the upazila have also been severely waterlogged. Due to the rising water levels in the rivers, the coastal areas of the Pashur River are witnessing flooding, submerging homes and roads.

Mongla Port Municipality Executive Officer, Amal Krishno Saha, acknowledged, "Waterlogging has occurred in various areas due to continuous rainfall. Unless the rain stops, the water levels won’t decrease. We are still dispatching municipal workers to the affected areas to help drain the water."

Mongla Weather Office In-Charge, Mohammad Harun Ar Rashid, stated, "Due to the low pressure in the sea and the active monsoon winds, rainfall will continue. We expect more rainfall in the coming 3-4 days. In the last 24 hours, Mongla has recorded 113 millimeters of rain."
