KATHALIA, February 25, 2026 (V7N) — In a tragic culmination of long-term domestic terror, a father surrendered to the police after killing his drug-addicted son in Chonauta village of Kathalia upazila. Abdul Barek Khan, 55, reportedly hacked his son to death on February 15 and subsequently called the national emergency hotline 999 to confess and seek police intervention.
The deceased, 25-year-old Mehedi Hasan Shuvo, had been a source of extreme fear for both his family and the local community. According to police and neighbors, Shuvo’s drug addiction had led to frequent violent outbursts, including stabbing incidents and the physical torture of his parents. The situation reached a breaking point on the day of the incident when Shuvo demanded 3 lakh BDT from his father, vandalized their home, and purchased a sharp weapon (dao) from the local market, threatening to "slaughter" both parents by nightfall.
Fearing for their lives, Abdul Barek advised his wife, Khushi Begum, to sleep in a separate room for safety. At approximately 3:00 am, while Shuvo was asleep, Barek used a dao to kill his son. Following the act, he immediately contacted the Kathalia Police Station via 999. Upon arrival, police recovered the body and took Barek into custody.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kathalia-Rajapur Circle) Md. Shah Alam, along with Kathalia OC Abu Naser Raihan, inspected the scene and confirmed Shuvo's history of violence. "The family and local residents were terrified of Shuvo," ASP Shah Alam stated, noting that the father acted out of deep-seated fear and desperation following the son's death threats.
Despite the circumstances, a formal case has been filed against Abdul Barek Khan by his wife, Khushi Begum, as per legal procedure. The incident has sparked intense local debate regarding the devastating impact of narcotics on families and the lack of accessible rehabilitation services in rural districts.
