MONGLA, February 25, (V7N) — In a significant gesture of social welfare ahead of the holy month, Municipal BNP President and former Mayor Md. Zulfiqar Ali has distributed essential food items to thousands of underprivileged families in Mongla. The distribution ceremony took place at his residence on Madrasa Road on Tuesday afternoon, drawing a large number of local residents.
Each beneficiary received a comprehensive food package containing staples such as rice, pulses, potatoes, semai (vermicelli), chira (flattened rice), salt, and sugar. The initiative was carefully organized to support the extremely poor across all nine wards of the municipality, ensuring that the most vulnerable members of the community can observe their fasts with dignity.
Former Mayor Zulfiqar Ali, a well-known figure for his philanthropic activities, personally handed over the items to the men and women in attendance. During the event, he emphasized that providing for those in need is a core responsibility, regardless of religion or caste. This outreach follows his long-standing tradition of utilizing personal resources to meet the daily needs of the municipality's poor, a practice he maintained even during his tenure as mayor.
The distribution comes as market prices for essential commodities have seen a seasonal uptick, placing a strain on low-income households. Local residents expressed their gratitude, noting that such private initiatives are crucial for bridging the gap until government social safety net programs are fully deployed for the season.
The event was attended by local BNP leaders and activists, who assisted in the orderly dispersal of the supplies. Observers noted that Zulfiqar Ali’s continued engagement with the community reinforces his influence within the Mongla municipal area as the political landscape shifts toward upcoming local elections.
As Ramadan approaches, similar private and political charity events are expected to increase across the Bagerhat district. The local administration has also been urged to monitor market stability to ensure that food remains accessible for all citizens during the month of fasting.
