Khagrachhari Feb 26, (V7N) - A devastating fire swept through Sajek Valley in Baghaichhari, destroying 94 structures, including 32 resorts, 35 residential homes, 20 shops, and 7 restaurants on Monday. Following the incident, the Rangamati district administration has temporarily restricted tourist entry to the area. Deputy Commissioner Habib Ullah confirmed the restriction.
"We have requested a temporary suspension of tourist visits to Sajek," said DC Habib Ullah. Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner Imtiaz Yasin from the Rangamati district administration’s media wing stated that the total number of burned structures could be between 120 to 140, although no casualties have been reported.
The fire reportedly started at 12:45 PM in Eco Valley Resort, rapidly spreading to nearby establishments. Resort owner Indrajit Chakma said that local residents, police, and the army tried but failed to contain the blaze. Firefighters from Baghaichhari, Dighinala, Khagrachhari, Panchhari, and Rangamati—totaling 11 fire units—rushed to the scene, finally bringing the flames under control by 5 PM.
Mohammad Zaker Hossain, Deputy Director of Khagrachhari Fire Service and Civil Defense, stated that firefighting efforts were hampered due to a water shortage in the hilly region. Preliminary investigations suggest an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire.
The Rangamati district administration has assured that a damage assessment will be conducted, and victims will receive assistance accordingly.
